How the Chicago police beat and killed a man with schizophrenia

A man who lived with schizophrenia in Chicago has died after police in a controversial drug bust in his neighborhood beat him and shot him dead, a family member said.

The death comes just days after Chicago police arrested a suspect in the case, police said.

In the wake of the death, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the department is conducting an investigation into the police use of deadly force.

In a statement Monday night, McCarthy said, “We will thoroughly review the circumstances of the events that led to the death of our friend and colleague and are conducting a thorough investigation.”

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that the department had not received any complaints about the shooting and that “the matter is under investigation.”
